Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech, press, and assembly; the right to vote; freedom from involuntary servitude; and the right to equality in public places. Discrimination occurs when the civil rights of an individual are denied or interfered with because of their membership in a particular group or class. Statutes have been enacted to prevent discrimination based on race, sex, religion, age, previous condition of servitude, physical limitation, national origin, and in some instances sexual preference. Children who live in Colbert attend either Colbert Elementary School or Midway Elementary School, both of which, along with Shiloh Hills Elemntary, feed into the newly formed Mountainside Middle School (previously Mead Middle School), which feeds into Mt. Spokane High School. Additionally, the K-12 private school Northwest Christian is located in Colbert. Northwest Christian was founded in 1949, and their men's basketball team has won the 2B High School tournament the past four years.
