In a criminal case, the state, through a prosecutor, initiates the suit, while in a civil case the victim brings the suit. Persons convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or both. Criminal defense attorneys represent clients who have been accused of committing a crime, and defend their rights at each stage of a misdemeanor or felony case -- from an arrest to an appeal after conviction. Hornitos (formerly, Hornitas) is an unincorporated community in Mariposa County, California. It is located on Burns Creek 14 miles (23 km) south of Coulterville, at an elevation of 843 feet (257 m). The Hornitas post office opened in 1856, and changed its name to Hornitos in 1877. "Hornitos" means "little ovens" in Spanish.
