In a criminal case, the state, through a prosecutor, initiates the suit, while in a civil case the victim brings the suit. Persons convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or both. Criminal defense attorneys represent clients who have been accused of committing a crime, and defend their rights at each stage of a misdemeanor or felony case -- from an arrest to an appeal after conviction. Cottonwood is a city in Idaho County, Idaho, United States. The population was 944 at the 2000 census. Cottonwood is just west of U.S. Route 95, between Grangeville and Lewiston. The Cottonwood Butte ski area is west of the city, on the east face of the mountain of the same name. Also west of the city is St. Gertrude's Convent, begun in the early 1900s. The order of Benedictine nuns traces their history to twelfth century Switzerland. The chapel at St. Gertrude's is among the most ornate in the state.
