In a criminal case, the state, through a prosecutor, initiates the suit, while in a civil case the victim brings the suit. Persons convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or both. Glidden is a town in Carroll County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,253 at the 2000 census. The town is named in honor of Joseph Farwell Glidden (1813–1906) of DeKalb, Illinois, who invented barbed wire in 1873. Glidden is the birthplace of Merle Hay, one of the first three Americans killed in World War I.
