In a criminal case, the state, through a prosecutor, initiates the suit, while in a civil case the victim brings the suit. Persons convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or both. Hematite is an unincorporated community in eastern Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. It is located about seven miles northeast of De Soto. Stephen Osborn founded the community in 1861 and named it after the iron ore mineral hematite that is found there.
