The population was 7,751 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Scotts Bluff County. Gering was founded in 1887 at the base of a bluff which is now a National Park called Scotts Bluff National Monument. The city of Scottsbluff was founded across the North Platte River from the bluff in 1900.
