Wathena is a city in Doniphan County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,348 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Joseph, MO–KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is named for Wathena, a Native American chief of the Kickapoo tribe who once lived on the townsite.
