Waveland is a city located in Hancock County, Mississippi, on the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Waveland was incorporated in 1972. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,674. Waveland was nearly destroyed by Hurricanes Camille on August 17, 1969 and Katrina on August 29, 2005 (see below). The current mayor of Waveland is Democrat Tommy Longo.
