The spelling for the city comes from the Latin phonetic spelling for the Myaamia (also spelled Maumee) tribe, and is correctly pronounced "Me-ah-me," although it is commonly rendered "My-am-me," except in Oklahoma, where the vernacular pronunciation of "my-am-uh" is used.
