Iowa Code § 307.23

1. It shall be the duty of the attorney general to do all of the following:

a. Act as legal advisor to the department, commission, and director.

b. Provide legal services for the department.

2. The attorney general shall appoint assistant attorneys general as necessary to carry out these duties.
