Sec. 1. (a) A law enforcement officer shall investigate each motor vehicle accident that results in any of the following:

(1) The injury or death of a person.

(2) Total property damage to an apparent extent of at least two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500).

(b) A law enforcement officer present at the scene of an accident shall ensure that each operator is in compliance with the requirements of IC 9-26-1-1.1, regardless of the apparent extent of the total property damage.
