N.Y. Veterans' Services Law § 7

* § 7. Information on status of veterans receiving assistance.\nDepartments, divisions, bureaus, boards, commissions and agencies of the\nstate and political subdivisions thereof, which provide assistance,\ntreatment, counseling, care, supervision or custody in service areas\ninvolving health, mental health, family services, criminal justice or\nemployment, including but not limited to the office of addiction\nservices and supports, office of mental health, office of probation and\ncorrectional alternatives, office of children and family services,\noffice of temporary and disability assistance, department of health,\ndepartment of labor, local workforce investment boards, office for\npeople with developmental disabilities, and department of corrections\nand community supervision, shall request assisted persons to provide\ninformation with regard to their veteran status and military\nexperiences. Individuals identifying themselves as veterans shall be\nadvised that the department of veterans' services and local veterans'\nservice agencies established pursuant to section fourteen of this\narticle provide assistance to veterans regarding benefits under federal\nand state law. Information regarding veterans status and military\nservice provided by assisted persons solely to implement this section\nshall be protected as personal confidential information under article\nsix-A of the public officers law against disclosure of confidential\nmaterial, and used only to assist in the diagnosis, treatment,\nassessment and handling of the veteran's problems within the agency\nrequesting such information and in referring the veteran to the\ndepartment of veterans' services for information and assistance with\nregard to benefits and entitlements under federal and state law.\n * NB Effective April 1, 2023\n
