Utah Code § 41-6a-1122

Self-balancing electric skateboards

Enacted by Chapter 452, 2025 General Session

(1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a self-balancing electric skateboard is subject to the provisions under this chapter for a bicycle.

(2) For a person operating a self-balancing electric skateboard, the following provisions do not apply:

(a) any reference to seating positions and handle bar usage, including under Sections 41-6a-1112 and 41-6a-1501;

(b) required lights, horns, and mirrors under Section 41-6a-1506; and

(c) driver licensing requirements under Section 53-3-202.

(3) A person may operate a self-balancing electric skateboard across a roadway in a crosswalk, except that the person may not operate the self-balancing electric skateboard in a negligent manner in the crosswalk:

(a) so as to collide with a:

(i) pedestrian; or

(ii) person operating a bicycle, vehicle, or device propelled by human power; or

(b) at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the existing conditions, giving regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.
