Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Act

Alaska · Motor Vehicles · §§ 28.20.010 to 28.20.640 · 67 sections

Overview

This act requires the owners and operators of motor vehicles to be financially responsible for the injuries and property damage they cause, and prescribes how that responsibility must be established and proven. Liability insurance is the principal mechanism: the act sets minimum coverage amounts, dictates required, optional, and prohibited policy terms, distinguishes owner's from operator's policies, and provides for certification, standard proof-of-insurance forms, and insurer notice when a policy lapses — while allowing alternatives such as a surety bond, a deposit of cash or securities, or qualification as a self-insurer. Administration falls to the state motor vehicle agency, which may adopt rules and suspend a driver's license and vehicle registration or driving privilege when the required evidence is not furnished or maintained, and violations of its provisions are punishable as an offense.
