A person appointed in the stead of another, to represent him. A peer can vote by proxy, but a member of the house of commons cannot. In corporations where the right to vote is founded on ownership of capital stock, as property, voting by proxy is generally allowed.

The authority or power given to one person to vote for another is also called a proxy. Annual payments made by the parochial clergy to the bishop, &c., on visitation, have been, according to Wharton, termed proxies.
