Adoption law governs the legal process by which an adult becomes the permanent legal parent of a child who is not their biological child. A completed adoption creates a full parent-child relationship, with all the rights and responsibilities that come with it.

Adoption arises in many forms, including the adoption of a stepchild, adoption of a relative, adoption through an agency or foster care, private adoption arranged between families, and adoption of a child from another country. Each type follows its own procedures, but all share the goal of legally and permanently placing a child in a stable home.

Key concepts a non-lawyer should understand include the requirement that the legal rights of the child's existing parents generally must be ended or voluntarily surrendered before an adoption can be finalized; the central focus on the best interests of the child; and the role of court approval, which makes the new parent-child relationship official. Background checks, home studies, and waiting periods are common parts of the process.

People typically consult an adoption lawyer when beginning the adoption process, when consent or parental rights questions are unclear or contested, or when the situation involves added complexity such as an interstate or international placement. Legal guidance helps ensure the process is completed properly and the adoption is secure.
