Consumer protection law governs the relationship between buyers and the businesses that sell them goods, services, and credit. Its purpose is to prevent and remedy unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices that take advantage of ordinary consumers.

This area covers a broad set of everyday problems: false or misleading advertising, hidden or surprise charges, aggressive or deceptive debt collection, identity theft, inaccurate credit reporting, unfair lending terms, and scams that target vulnerable buyers. It also reaches the basic promises a seller makes about a product, known as warranties.

Key concepts a non-lawyer should understand include the difference between a deceptive practice, which misleads, and an unfair one, which causes harm that the consumer could not reasonably avoid. Consumers generally have rights to accurate information, honest pricing, and fair treatment, and many disputes can be resolved through complaints to a business or a government agency before any lawsuit is needed.

People typically seek a lawyer when they have suffered a real financial loss, when a company refuses to correct a clear error, or when a practice appears to harm many customers at once. A lawyer can explain available remedies and whether a claim is worth pursuing individually or as part of a larger group.
